Unwind

Unwind - Neal Shusterman I really liked this book. At first, I really got a headache from reading it because it was in present tense. Later on, though, I started to appreciate the uniqueness through which Neal Shusterman communicates his writing— simply and effectively. This book was not at all like the novel it seemed like after reading some of the reviews, but met my expectations. The switch between character narration doesn't provide that much change, however, since the entire novel is narrated in third person.

My only complaints are about how SPOILER ALERT! unrealistic the Heartland War was. It seems like a controversy like this should be more... I don't know, indirect? Discreet? I just can't really imagine an all out war. More like a bunch of protests and vandalism. Also, poor Roland. Shusterman could have done a better job making the reader like Roland. After all, we need some motives, some sympathy for him. More than his mom mysteriously kicking him out.

Otherwise, the pacing was good and the character development showed mostly strongly in Connor, although I was a little disappointed that there wasn't that much. Also, Risa and Roland didn't change as well, and Lev was a little mixed up and confusing. But I understand that this is part of a series, and I hope to read the next book soon.

4/10 stars for a good short read.
